I'm constantly researching and digging up old direct response offers and sales letters from generations past, to study…
I prefer to focus on the sales letters, offers and ads from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, etc.
They had it more difficult than we have it today...
Their skills were sharper than the "gurus" of today...
One day I was searching for the original sales letter to Joe Karbo's book "The Lazy Man's Way To R!ches"
This was a self-published book that he launched in 1973 and sold via direct response ads in magazines...
He went on to sell more than 2.7 million books!
In the 70s!?!
Hence me spending my free time to study this guy.
But Karbo isn't the greatest marketer you've never heard of...
So, back to the story...
As I was sleuthing around the inter-webs reverse engineering Karbo's offers I found a video from a guy named Kevin Hutto talking about Karbo's offer.
Ended up watching many of Kevin's videos in the next few days and started bantering with him in his YouTube comments.
A week later his assistant reached out and invited me to come teach about affiliate marketing to one of his inner circle groups.
First major take away:
Having a giant body of work that you've published is a huge sign to the other real players in your niche that you are the real deal.
Without a body of work and simply pestering him in the comments I never would have gotten my foot in the door.
In fact, I wasn't even trying to get on a call, just said 'thanks' on all the vids I watched and he reverse engineered my brand from my YT comment/profile.
So after being invited, I showed up and taught affiliate marketing…
His students were blown away and on that call he shared how similar our philosophies are about business.
Here's the gist.
Build automated systems that generate cash flow and require minimal effort from me after they're built.
We start hopping on a two-hour zoom called multiple times a week to just chat.
Because it can be a lonely path as a solopreneur.
We don't need big teams or offices filled with dozens of people to make millions...
We can do it with our ideas and laptops.
And honestly, there's very few people who can do what we do...
It's rarified air up here.
So...
As I learned more about his story, his offers and his business, it just blew me away.
Turns out he's been doing this A LOT longer than I have...
He's been doing 7 figures per year since 2003!!!
It was on these calls that he shared his "digital oil wells" framework and all the examples from his business...
This was a total game-changer for me.
It's the best mental model / framework I've ever heard when it comes to building businesses online.

Well… Kevin passed away suddenly, last year...
His passing got me to rethink a LOT about my business and about business in general.

And when you mix in the global macro-economic and geopolitical environment we all find ourselves in today...
Well, I just think it's safe to say that everything has changed.
